Family Finds Rare Snake Stranded on the Sand

Cellphone video shows the animal moving weakly on the sand while the family tried to help it back into the surf. The footage, first broadcast by a Los Angeles television station, quickly spread online and was picked up by outlets across the country within days.

Marine biologists who reviewed the video identified the animal as a yellow-bellied sea snake, though no state wildlife agency has issued a formal confirmation. The species carries potent venom used to kill small fish, but bites on humans are extremely rare because the snake is slow and non-aggressive out of water.

A Species California Has Seen Only Six Times

The yellow-bellied sea snake normally stays in warm tropical waters far south of the U.S. border, rarely ranging north of Baja California. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County confirms only six of these snakes have ever been documented in the state, with the first recorded sighting in San Clemente back in 1972.

Greg Pauly, a herpetologist at the museum, said five of the six California sightings happened during El Niño events, when unusually warm currents push tropical species farther north than normal. “We’ve only had six yellow-bellied sea snakes previously show up in California,” Pauly said, calling the pattern tied almost entirely to those warm-water cycles.

El Niño, Not Climate Change, Driving the Pattern

Most scientists quoted in coverage of the sighting tie the rare appearance to El Niño, a naturally occurring ocean warming cycle that happens every few years, not a permanent shift in the climate. That distinction matters. Some national outlets have folded this same story into broader climate change narratives, but the historical record shows these snakes have always followed El Niño years going back more than five decades, long before “climate crisis” became a media buzzword.

Families along the Orange County coast do not need a lecture on global warming to understand what is happening. A warm-water current arrived, a tropical animal followed it, and it washed up exhausted on a beach. That is a straightforward, observable weather pattern, not proof of a looming environmental catastrophe requiring new government mandates.

Coastal Erosion Emergency Adds to Unusual Year for Orange County

The snake sighting comes as Orange County officials declared a state of emergency over severe coastal erosion tied to the same El Niño swells battering the region’s beaches. Local leaders are managing real, tangible damage to shorelines and public property, a practical problem that deserves attention separate from broader political debates over long-term climate policy.

Beachgoers are advised to leave any stranded sea snake alone and report sightings to wildlife officials rather than attempt a rescue themselves. The species remains venomous even while weak on land, and common sense says a family outing to the beach is no place to test that fact firsthand.
