Runoff Bombshell: Trump’s Grip Tested

Trump’s chosen “total winner” for Louisiana’s Senate seat now faces a tight showdown that will test both his clout and the future of America First in a deep-red state.

Story Snapshot

  • Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow faces former Trump aide John Fleming in a Republican Senate runoff.
  • Letlow crushed the primary with about 45% of the vote to Fleming’s 28%, ousting anti-Trump Sen. Bill Cassidy.[1]
  • Polls now show a much closer race, as Fleming pitches himself as the “true” America First conservative.[9]
  • The outcome will shape Trump’s grip on the Senate and decide which brand of conservatism leads Louisiana.[1]

Trump Moves to Replace a Republican Who Voted to Convict Him

President Donald Trump backed Rep. Julia Letlow early to drive out Sen. Bill Cassidy, the Republican who voted to convict him after January 6.[1][11] Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming finished ahead of Cassidy in the May 16 primary, sending the anti-Trump incumbent into retirement and setting up today’s runoff.[1][9][11] Letlow’s first-round showing was strong: she took nearly 45% of the vote, compared with about 28% for Fleming and roughly 25% for Cassidy, a clear win for Trump’s base.[1]

Trump’s team framed the race as part of a wider effort to purge Republicans who cross him and replace them with loyal conservatives.[1][9] In an online rally days before the runoff, Letlow told voters they had “a chance to send a clear message that Louisiana stands with President Trump,” stressing that he endorsed her because “he knows I will stand with him.”[1] Trump, in turn, urged supporters to “get out and vote” for Letlow and praised her as a strong America First conservative who helped drive his border and immigration agenda.[6]

Two Conservatives, One America First Lane

Letlow’s record gives her real MAGA credentials, especially on schools and parental rights. She authored a Parents Bill of Rights aimed at giving moms and dads more say and pushing back on left-leaning content in classrooms, a direct shot at diversity and inclusion pushes that many families see as indoctrination.[11] She also campaigns on securing the border, backing law enforcement, and unleashing American energy, pitching herself as the Trump-endorsed conservative who will stand with him in the Senate.[6][1] That message speaks to voters tired of open borders, woke lessons, and high energy costs.

Fleming, however, has carved out his own brand of hardline conservatism. A former House member and early House Freedom Caucus founder, he served in Trump’s first administration and calls himself the “prototypical America First candidate.”[6] He argues he is the most conservative option in the race and says Trump would never back anyone without a true conservative record or real relationship with him.[8] Fleming also attacks the carbon capture industry as dangerous to Louisiana citizens and as part of climate change ideology that threatens jobs and landowners, appealing to voters wary of green schemes pushed by global elites.[8]

A Strong Primary Lead Meets Anemic Turnout and Mixed Polls

Letlow’s double-digit primary lead would normally make this runoff a formality.[1][6] But the race has tightened as turnout has dropped and both campaigns push clashing polls. One Kaplan Strategies survey shows Letlow leading Fleming 52% to 37%, suggesting Trump’s pick remains clearly ahead.[7] Fleming’s side cites a JMC Analytics poll that has him up 45% to 40%, claiming late momentum and an upset brewing.[9] Analysts warn that campaign polls can be biased, yet their existence feeds media narratives of a toss-up rather than a Trump walkover.

Low expected turnout adds more risk. Commentators describe the environment as “anemic,” which can favor a candidate like Fleming who has a “sticky constituency” of very loyal voters who always show up.[4] While Trump’s backing gives Letlow a broad coalition, those supporters still need to go vote for that advantage to matter. If grassroots conservatives stay home, the state could end up sending to the Senate not the president’s hand-picked ally but a rival claiming to be “more” America First, weakening Trump’s leverage over the Republican caucus.[1][9]

What’s at Stake for Louisiana Conservatives and the Trump Agenda

The seat Letlow and Fleming are fighting over will almost certainly stay Republican, since Louisiana has voted reliably for Trump in recent presidential elections and is rated a “safe Trump” state.[12][10] That means the real choice is not between right and left, but between two versions of the right. A Letlow win would give Trump a loyal partner who already proved she can write and pass conservative legislation on culture and education, like the Parents Bill of Rights.[11] Her victory would also show that Trump can still shape the party by ousting those who turned on him, such as Cassidy who voted to convict.[11]

A Fleming win would send a different signal. It would elevate a candidate who loudly fights climate and carbon capture projects, stands closer to some grassroots talk radio and parish committees, and insists he is the “real” America First voice for Louisiana.[8][9] But he lacks clear primary-source policy papers and major legislative wins on those issues, relying more on rhetoric than written plans.[8] For constitutional conservatives concerned about judges, gun rights, parental control, and stopping federal overreach, the question is which contender not only talks tough but also has the record to deliver in the Senate when the Trump administration needs reliable votes.
