(NewsBroadcast.com) – China is notorious for its censorship, authoritarian government, and the genocide that its communist party is committing against its Uyghur population in the country’s northwest providences. However, while these horrific things are happening in the Asian nation, it is also preparing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Following the trend of keeping a tight grip on the country’s society, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that only “spectators residing in China’s mainland” can purchase tickets to attend the upcoming winter games.
On Wednesday, September 29, the IOC formally announced that determination. Its press release said this decision would “facilitate the growth of winter sports in China” and bring “a favourable atmosphere to the venues.” The IOC also factored the likelihood of a coronavirus outbreak at the games into the decision, and it shared the news on Twitter:
The next Winter Olympic Games @Beijing2022 (coming up in only 127 days) announced that spectator tickets will only be available to residents in China's mainland in order to deliver a safe and successful Winter Olympics.

Rumors have spread that some groups and nations are considering boycotting the Olympic games, citing how it could greatly punish the nation that is actively committing human rights crimes. Thus far, the US State Department has denied any such rumor, although many around the world wonder if such an act would help put pressure on China during such a critical point in history.
